Recommended coffee gear for home
You don't need a café kitchen to drink great coffee at home. Here is the gear that really makes a difference, in order of importance.
1. A grinder: the most important investment
Fresh coffee ground just before brewing is the single biggest upgrade you can make. A burr grinder grinds evenly, and you can taste the difference.
- Fellow Opus: a grinder for every method, from espresso to cold brew. A good choice if you also make espresso or moka.
- Fellow Ode Gen 2: a flat-burr grinder built for brewing methods: filter, French press and cold brew. Not for espresso. You can upgrade it with the Gen 2 Brew burrs.
2. A gooseneck kettle
Pour-over needs a slow, precise pour, and a gooseneck spout makes that easy.
- Fellow Stagg EKG Pro: an electric kettle with temperature control.
- Fellow Stagg Stovetop: for those who prefer the stove.
3. Pour-over or a filter brewer
- Fellow Stagg pour-over set: dripper, carafe and filters, everything you need to start. See our pour-over guide.
- Fellow Aiden: a filter brewer where you set the temperature and brew profile, for one cup or a full carafe.
4. French press
Fellow Clara: an insulated French press that holds its heat through the brew. See our French press guide.
5. Moka pot
The Italian classic. Bialetti moka pots come in models for every stove: the Brikka for coffee with foam, and the stainless-steel Venus or Moka Induction for induction hobs. See our moka pot guide.
6. Keeping beans fresh
The Fellow Atmos vacuum canister pulls the air out and keeps beans fresh for longer. See how to store coffee beans.
7. For milk lovers
The Fellow Eddy steaming pitcher helps you steam milk and pour with precision.
Frequently asked questions
What should I buy first?
A burr grinder. Coffee ground right before brewing upgrades every method, even the simplest.
Do I need a coffee scale?
It's a small, cheap upgrade that makes a big difference. With a scale you can repeat a good cup instead of guessing with spoons.
Moka pot or espresso machine?
A moka pot is cheap, simple and makes strong, rich coffee. An espresso machine makes real espresso and steamed milk, but needs a good grinder and more practice.
What gear do I need for cold brew?
Nothing special: a jar or a French press, very coarsely ground coffee and a fridge. The full recipe is in the cold brew guide.
