How to make coffee with an AeroPress
The AeroPress is small, easy to clean and forgiving. It's perfect for a single cup, for travel, and for anyone who likes to play with a recipe until it tastes just right.
What you need
- An AeroPress and a paper filter (rinse it with hot water first).
- Coffee ground medium-fine, between filter and espresso.
- A kettle and a scale.
Standard recipe
- Set the AeroPress on your cup with the rinsed filter and add 15 g of coffee.
- Pour 220–250 ml of water at 85–92 °C and stir gently.
- Insert the plunger just a little, so the coffee doesn't drip through, and wait about a minute and a half.
- Press slowly for about 30 seconds, until you hear a hiss of air.
The inverted method
Turn the AeroPress upside down with the plunger at the bottom, add coffee and water, and wait. Screw on the cap with the filter, carefully flip it onto your cup and press. Nothing drips early, and the brew is more even.
How to adjust the taste
- Sour or thin – grind finer or steep longer.
- Bitter or heavy – grind coarser, shorten the time or lower the temperature a little.
- Want it stronger – brew a concentrate with less water and top up with hot water or milk.
Which coffee for the AeroPress
Almost any coffee works. For a bright, fruity cup try Ethiopia Guji or Costa Rica; for a sweet, round cup try Colombia.
Common mistakes
- Pressing hard and fast – the press should be slow and light, about 30 seconds. Pressing hard pulls out bitterness and can tear the filter.
- Pressing past the hiss – the last drops are bitter. Stop when you hear the air hiss.
- Overfilling in the inverted method – leave room at the top, or the coffee spills when you flip it.
Frequently asked questions
How much coffee for an AeroPress?
15 g of coffee to 220–250 ml of water. For a strong espresso-style concentrate use 17–18 g with about 100 ml of water, then top up with hot water or milk.
What grind for an AeroPress?
Between moka (4) and filter (6). Finer with a short steep, or coarser with a long one. A filter grind is a good place to start.
Paper or metal filter?
A paper filter gives a clean, bright cup. A metal filter lets more oils and fines through, giving more body, closer to a French press.
Can I make iced coffee with an AeroPress?
Yes. Brew a strong concentrate with a little hot water and press it straight onto a glass of ice.
